Observations on History and Life

On the road with Grandad and Dinderina

These are terrible pictures, but I tried to show the Mississippi swamp, marshlands, riverside, the gulf, beach, my finger, and more bridges.

Visited the Vicksburg area today. Photographs can’t capture how difficult it had to have been for an army to march through, how broad the Mississippi was for the gunboats to traverse, and how hilly the land was where the people were besieged and dug caves to live in for protection.

I’m northwest of there now, in Arkansas. Just caught a bit of the rain. I’m in clear weather now. I suppose your mother’s side of the family would have said “it was a right smart little rain,” and my side would have said ”it was flat raining out.” Anyway, I’m just plumb glad I’m past it.

Dinderena suddenly told me to turn down this road. I drove about a mile and found this. Dinderina said to make a u turn and go back to the highway.

I wanted to get back to the main road. Dinderena said she knew a shortcut.

I saw a sign for the Devil’s backbone so I took it. I like it a lot better when the white line is on the edge of the road.

This ended up being about 15 miles long. I couldn’t film the bad parts because I was driving—like the two bridges with water running over them!
